A Simple Way to Protect Your
Vehicle's Turbocharged Engine
Once reserved for
sports cars, turbochargers are becoming commonplace in family
sedans as automakers try to squeeze greater efficiency out
of smaller engines in order to meet tough fuel-economy standards.
The popular Ford Fusion and Chevy Malibu are just two examples
of daily drivers available with turbocharged engines. A turbocharged
four-cylinder engine can generate as much power as a naturally
aspirated six-cylinder engine while using less fuel, offering
drivers the best of both worlds.
The added performance
and efficiency comes at a price, however. Turbochargers use
exhaust gases to spin an air compressor that compresses clean,
cold air before directing it into the combustion chamber.
The added oxygen means more fuel is added to the fuel/air
mixture, resulting in more power. The increased heat turbocharged
engines produce combined with the rotational speed of the
turbine create brutal operating conditions low-quality oils
simply can't handle. Increased heat hastens the oxidation
process and causes oil to break down sooner, leading to performance-robbing
deposits, while shearing forces inside the turbo can tear
apart the molecular structure of the oil, leading to viscosity
loss. Oil that has lost viscosity can fail to provide an adequate
fluid film to guard against wear, potentially leading to catastrophic
One of the simplest
ways motorists can protect their turbocharged vehicles against
these challenges is to use only high-quality synthetic motor
oil, such as AMSOIL synthetic motor oils, and adhere to the
severe-service drain interval recommendations. AMSOIL synthetic
motor oils naturally resist extreme heat and viscosity loss
in the most demanding conditions. They are formulated using
high-quality, molecularly uniform base oils and premium additives
to deliver consistent performance in the toughest operating
It's one of the
best investments you can make in your turbocharged vehicle's
performance and longevity.

What You Need To Know
About Motorcycle Oils
As with any vehicle equipped with an internal combustion engine,
proper lubrication is essential to insure performance and
longevity. It is important to point out that not all internal
combustion engines are similarly designed or exposed to the
same types of operation. These variations in design and operation
place different demands on engine oils. Specifically, the
demands placed on motorcycle engine oils are more severe than
those placed on automotive engine oils. Therefore, the performance
requirements of motorcycle oils are more demanding as well.
Though the degree may be debatable,
few will disagree that a difference exists between automotive
and motorcycle applications. In which area these differences
are and to what degree they alter lubrication requirements
are not clear to most motorcycle operators. By comparing some
basic equipment information, one can better understand the
differences that exist.
There are six primary differences
between motorcycle and automotive engine applications:
Operational Speed -
Motorcycles tend to operate at engine speeds significantly
higher than automobiles. This places additional stress on
engine components, increasing the need for wear protection.
It also subjects lubricating oils to higher loading and shear
forces. Elevated operating RPMs also promote foaming, which
can reduce an oil's load-carrying ability and accelerated
Compression Ratio -
Motorcycles tend to operate with higher engine compression
ratios than automobiles. Higher compression ratios place additional
stress on engine components and increase engine operating
temperatures. Higher demands are placed on the oil to reduce
wear. Elevated operating temperatures also promote thermal
degradation of the oil, reducing its life expectancy and increasing
the formation of internal engine deposits.
Density - Motorcycle engines produce nearly twice
the horsepower per cubic inch of displacement of automobile
engines. This exposes the lubricating oil to higher temperatures
Variable Engine Cooling
- In general, automotive applications usa a sophisticated
water-cooling system to control engine operating temperatures.
Similar systems can be found in motorcycle applications, but
other designs also exist. Many motorcycles are air-cooled
or use a combination air/oil design. Though effective, they
result in greater fluctuations in operating temperatures,
particularly when motorcycle are operated in stop-and-go traffic.
Elevated operating temperature promotes oxidation and causes
oils to thin, reducing their load carrying ability.
Functionality - In automotive applications, engine
oils are required to lubricate only the engine. Other automotive
assemblies, such as transmissions, have seperate fluid reservoirs
that contain a lubricant designed specifically for that component.
The requirements of that fluid differ significantly from those
of automotive engine oil. Many motorcycles have a common sump
supplying oil to both the engine and transmission. In such
cases, the oil is required to meet the needs of both the engine
and transmission gears. Many motorcycles also incorporate
a frictional clutch within the transmission that uses the
Motorcycles are typically used less frequently than automobiles.
Whereas automobiles are used on a daily basis, motorcycle
use is usually periodic and in many cases seasonal. These
extended periods of inactivity place additional stress on
motorcycle oils. In these circumstances, rust and acid corrosion
protection are of critical concern.
It is apparent that motorcycle
applications place a different set of requirements on lubricating
oils. Motorcycle oils, therefore, must be formulated to address
this unique set of high stress conditions.
As a jet fighter
squadron commander Lieutenant Colonel Albert J. Amatuzio had
ample opportunity to witness synthetic lubricants in action.
These oils are used exclusively in jet engines because of
three extraordinary performance characteristics: an ability
to reduce friction and wear on engine components, an ability
to function dependably at severe temperature extremes and
an ability to withstand rigorous and lengthy engine operation
without chemical breakdown.
these same benefits would prove invaluable in combustion engines,
Amatuzio began conducting serious research in 1963. By 1966
he had formulated a synthetic motor oil and put it to use
in vehicles in northern Minnesota. Throughout the late '60s
Amatuzio continued his research and development and sold commercially
available synthetic oils under a variety of names. In 1970
he incorporated his own name into a commercially sold product
called AMMOIL. In 1971 this product name was changed to AMZOIL
and it continued to be sold commercially. The true milestone
came in 1972 when AMZOIL became the first synthetic motor
oil in the world to meet American Petroleum Institute criteria.
The new lubricant performed like no other before it. When
the first can appeared on the market in 1972, it signaled
the birth of an entire industry. AMSOIL synthetic lubricants
have expanded the boundaries of lubrication science and redefined
the performance possibilities of modern machinery and engines.
Facts - AMSOIL Saves You Money!
drain intervals means fewer oil changes, long term savings
and convenience. Even if you drive only 12,000 miles per year,
the cost for AMSOIL motor oil is less than you pay for petroleum
oil now! And you still get better wear protection, lower engine
temperatures, improved fuel efficiency and easier cold-weather
starts. All of these benefits add up to reduced operating
costs and longer engine life. Change your oil and filter today
and in 12 months change the oil and filter again. That's it!
What could be more convenient and good for your vehicle, too?
Fuel economy is
becoming more important with each passing year. Gas and diesel
prices keep rising, putting a major strain on businesses that
rely on vehicles and heavy equipment in their daily operations.
AMSOIL synthetic lubricants improve fuel economy by allowing
moving parts to move more freely, using less energy and creating
less friction than when conventional lubricants are used.
The use of AMSOIL
synthetic motor oil, gear lubes and transmission fluids can
have a profound impact on fuel economy. Industry tests demonstrate
an average conservative decrease in fuel consumption by two
to five percent by switching to synthetic lubricants. Many
AMSOIL customers report even larger gains in fuel economy.
Choice for the Environment
Messages on the
importance of being "green" and erasing our carbon
footprints are everywhere these days. Consumers are becoming
increasingly more conscious about how the purchasing decisions
they make impact the environment. On the other hand, worries
over rising costs of everyday purchases (fuel, groceries,
etc.) have consumers scrambling to find a product they can
feel good about that won't break the bank. Enter AMSOIL.
Since the introduction
of the world's first synthetic motor oil, AMSOIL synthetic
lubricants have been setting new standards for motor oil quality.
They are specially designed to protect engine components,
reduce emissions, last longer, reduce fuel consumption and
prevent environmental pollution. From the beginning, AMSOIL
synthetic motor oils have outperformed conventional petroleum
motor oils on all counts.
AMSOIL INC. has
been dedicated to helping reduce negative impacts on the environment.
AMSOIL was the first to recommend 25,000-mile/one-year drain
intervals. By safely extending drain intervals, AMSOIL synthetic
lubricants dramatically cut the amount of oil consumed and
emissions produced. This is not a new fad that AMSOIL is jumping
on board with; it is the way AMSOIL has always operated.
In addition to
the extended drain intervals, AMSOIL synthetic motor oils
are specially designed to protect engine components, extending
the life of the engine and reducing the need for replacing
engine parts. They are also thermally stable with a strong
resistance to high temperature volatility (burn-off), preventing
sludge deposits and keeping engines clean. Low volatility
and clean operation reduce oil consumption and emissions.
The advanced lubricity
(slipperiness) of AMSOIL synthetic lubricants has also been
proven to increase fuel economy. This reduces dependency on
foreign oil and overall fuel consumption. The resulting improvement
in fuel efficiency and reduction of emission levels contribute
to the conservations of natural resources and protection of
AMSOIL INC. doesn't
just leave the responsibilities of environmental protection
to the products; the company itself is diligent in making
efforts to keeping the earth clean. AMSOIL recycles virtually
100 percent of the corrugated trays and packaging boxes that
come into its facilities, equaling several tons of recycled
cardboard each month. All used steel drums and all "clean"
plastic bottles are also recycled.
AMSOIL INC. is
determined to continue to set the bar high for the lubrication
industry across the board, including with regards to environmental
responsibilities. Our long-standing quality products lead
the way to a greener, healthier planet for all.
Does Your Motor Oil Do This?
Permit Easy Starting?
Motor oil must provide easy cold weather
start-up. Petroleum oils are refined oils that contain wax,
thickening in cold temperatures and causing the oil to lose
fluidity and create drag on the engine upon start-up. Enough
drag inhibits the engine from reaching the critical cranking
speed required for the engine to start.
Synthetic Motor Oils contain no waxes, naturally maintaining
their fluidity in extremely low temperatures. AMSOIL Synthetic
Motor Oils flow quickly and reliably to allow easy starting
and immediate lubricating protection.
Lubricate and Prevent Wear?
Motor oil must prevent the metal-to-metal
contact within an engine that causes wear, scoring or seizure
of engine parts. Oil films on critical engine parts must be
constantly replenished through adequate lubricant flow and
Synthetic Motor Oils cling tenaciously to engine parts,
providing superior protection against wear even when faced
with high temperatures and intense shearing forces that cause
conventional oils to vaporize, shear back and lose their lubricating
Protect Against Rust?
Motor oil must neutralize the effects
of water and other combustion by-products that form rust.
Rust-inhibition is an especially important feature for stored
engines and engines subject to frequent short trip operations.
Motor oil must maintain an oil film
that keeps the surfaces of moving engine parts separated,
minimizing friction that produces excess heat and inhibits
Synthetic Motor Oils are formulated to keep friction to
an absolute minimum, providing outstanding film strength that
prevents metal-to-metal contact and minimizing internal fluid
friction to provide maximum fuel efficiency.
Keep Engine Parts Clean?
Motor oil must keep engines clean with
adequate detergent/dispersant additives that prevent the build-up
of sludge and varnish deposits which lead to oil flow restriction,
increased wear, loss of power and increased oil consumption.
Synthetic Motor Oils are formulated with top-quality detergent/dispersant
additives designed for long-term performance, effectively
keeping engines clean and deposit-free while maintaining the
superior protection properties of the oil.
Motor oil must protect engines from
the damaging effects of corrosion formed through the combination
of water, unburned fuel, combustion by-products, acids and
Synthetic Motor Oils are formulated with corrosion inhibitors
and high total base numbers (TBN), providing outstanding protection
against the damaging effects of corrosion.
Cool Engine Parts?
Motor oil must cool several critical
engine components, including the crankshaft, rod bearings,
camshaft and its bearings, timing gears, pistons and turbocharger.
These parts rely on supplies of cool oil in order to pick
up and carry heat to the crankcase, where it is transferred
to the surrounding air. If parts are allowed to overheat,
engine failure soon follows.
Synthetic Motor Oils are formulated with superior synthetic
base stocks, exhibiting exceptional heat transfer properties
and lubricity the effectively cool critical engine parts and
reduce engine operating temperatures.
Minimize Combustion Chamber
Motor oil must burn cleanly and hold
combustion chamber deposits to an absolute minimum. Excessive
deposits cause spark plugs to short out and combustion problems
such as pinging and knock. Deposits also act as heat barriers,
causing damage to engine components.
Synthetic Motor Oils run naturally cleaner than conventional
oils. Formulated with superior detergent/dispersant additive
packages, AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils provide outstanding
deposit control for extended drain intervals.
Seal Combustion Pressures?
Motor oil must "fill in"
the microscopic hills and valleys present on the surfaces
of piston rings, ring grooves and cylinder walls, sealing
the combustion chamber and preventing high combustion and
compression pressures from escaping into the crankcase and
reducing engine power and efficiency.
Synthetic Motor Oils maintain highly protective lubricant
films on rings and cylinder walls, keeping engine power and
efficiency at their peak, while also effectively protecting
Motor oil must contain effective antifoam
additives in order to preserve the lubricant's protective
qualities. Moving engine parts cause air in the crankcase
to be constantly whipped into the oil, causing foam that compromises
proper heat conduction and wear protection.
Synthetic Motor Oils contain high quality antifoam additives
and resist foaming in service, allowing the superior wear
protection and heat transfer properties of AMSOIL Synthetic
Motor Oils to be maintained for extended drain intervals.
Enhance Fuel Economy?
Motor oil must reduce friction within
the engine, which in turn reduces energy loss to "drag"
and allows more energy to reach the drivetrain. The more friction
is reduced, the more fuel is saved. The use of lower viscosity
lubricants reduces friction and improves fuel economy,
Synthetic Motor Oils are formulated to provide maximum
fuel efficiency. The smooth, uniform molecules produce minimal
internal friction, allowing maximum energy to each the drivetrain.
Independent tests show fuel savings of five to eight percent
when using AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils.
